Heres a piece i’m experimenting with ….
Wow! 2012 saw lots of excitement come this way!
As ever continued to sell my goods on etsy and create my bespoke pieces for individual requests. From 1940′s hat to a headpiece based on a brazillian tree i covered a vast expanse of style taste and demand, learning new tricks and methods along the way.
A few highlights and happenings of 2012
I made myself a workshop! After my piles and piles of flowers, feathers, fabric, trimmings, buttons, jewels, shells, tat, (the list goes on and on) got toooooo much for my bedroom to cope i set at converting my shed into a workshop. My own little creative space to call mine. Sundays in my shed with cerys matthews on the radio has most definately been one of my constant highlights of 2012.
Fumbalinas collaborated in an ongoing project with 5 wonderful artists which, in our combined efforts produced some amazingly promising work from each corner of our talents. One of the shots was even picked up by the cool and edgy electronic music group Ultraista and billboarded as their tour poster across the world (you can even buy a copy ane of their gigs)! Quite an achievement i’d say! What 2013 has in store for this project i am eager to find out….
I experimented with holding a stall at the prestigious and crafy Greenwich Market with a fellow crafter. The experience, people and atmosphere were lovely, however the sales were steady at best leaving me questioning my future as a weekly marketstall trader….
One of my headchains made its way onto the David Letterman show, and a picture featured in Rolling Stones online magazine!
AMAZING!!!
We also got a headpiece papped into the guardian paper on their coverage of the Edinburgh fringe!
I was approached by a major Lingerie Group, Eveden to loan out my headpieces for their ‘enchantment’ themed Spring Summer 2013 press event in the UK and Canada. The models looked STUNNING, and the event was hugely successful on all parts. I met some lovely people and established some budding working relationships. The outcomes of which shall follow in early 2013.
Which leads me onto the final months of 2012 and into the beginnings of 2013. I rounded the year off with the opening of my online shop and have 3 publications coming out in the next two months for Wedding Magazine, You and Your Wedding Magazine and Womens health Magazine (Release date tbc).
I am now a part time employee at the theatre i work for – allowing my more time to focus my energies on what i love. THIS. FUMBALINAS. making and sharing.
Heres hoping one day soon i will be blogging about doing this as a FULL TIME career.
So is the dream……

A while back fumbalinas featured in an online and IN PRINT article with our friends from TaNa Deptford who’d been approached to stage a photoshoot for the prestigious i-D mag! We took to the streets of South East London, (boombox intact) and fumbalina’d up to the nines, stopping along the way for the odd impromtu performance! i-D mag were for a treat!
Below is a snippet of the online article (with yours truly pictured on the top!) which you can read in full and watch us all in action here -

So, this august saw the fabulous girl trio ‘The Harmonettes’ trotting up to edinburgh for the Fringe festival, wowing audiences with their great ‘mini-musical’ show ’The Harmonttes go into Orbit’ and of course their great style! With there show a hit with the critics, and each of them Rocking out everday in their signature 50′s dresses and harmonette Charlotte in her fumablinas headpiece, they were sure to be noticed and got themselves a centre spread piccy in the guardian -
The girls bagged some great reviews and if you look close enough, you can spy the ‘fumbalinas‘ headpiece made especially for the event!

Spotted! Fumbalinas headpiece in the Guardian!
Well done ladies! Cracking stuff!

My first few attempts of upcyling old wigs….i love making em big messy and i really wanna play with different styles and colours and shapes and sizes and see what random materials i can find to add to them….watch this space…
A few i’ve experimented with so far……………..
A new creation is this ‘Flash Gordan’ inspired Eye/mask piece….i sill have to finish jewellwing the right eye but couldn’t resist showing off a sneak preview! (Wig done by me too!) Click images to make BIG!
An image from the film ‘Flash Gordan’ where the idea for this mask came from—–
So recently i had a commission from a lady wanting a piece of headwear made for a wedding she was due to attend. Wanting not quite a hat, but not a ‘fascinator’ either, i was set the challenge to come up with something in-between. Having done lots of garlands and headbands, this was my first request for a hat, and therefore a fresh and new challenge!
I started with a ready made hat i had acquired from a market a while back and cut to the size required for our new piece. Once cut i stitched the rim in neatly and firmly with millinery wire to keep strong and secure. I then proceded to arrange and layer the remnants and cut-offs of the original hat onto my new base -
After Handstitching all in neatly in place its then time to choose the right flowers……….
Once the flowers are chosen i handstitched the flowers into place and sewed a thin piece of elastic either side of the hat/headpiece (i tested this by pinning elastic into place first). I then Stitched a hair comb on the under base of the hat for added security and VOILA! My first official hat commision made!
And here are the final results on the lady herself……………….
Making this piece has given me a real urge to make (and wear) more hats/headpieces of a similiar style. There are gonna be more where this one came from, so keep your eyes peeled! And should you fancy something similar yourself , I would love the challenge! Feel free to hit me with your ideas…..
A recent request……
Had my usual success at Deptford market this weekend, bagging 2x sequin dresses (perfect for 2 upcoming birthdays!) a ‘pearly queen’ waistcoat (this is not useful at all but i found it amusing, and for £1 why the heck not?!) a selection of 1940′s outfits for my lovely mum, who is attending a 1940′s themed festival in a couple of weeks, and of course, a spot of shopping would not be complete without some artifical flowers to add to the collection! Best buy of the day goes to – an official ww2 gas mask i found for a fiver! Its pretty weird trying it on, but i have an array of ideas as to what i’m going to turn it into. God i love deptford market…
After clearing out an literal shed load of old junk and rubbish i have now tided, sorted and moved fumbalinas into its own mini workshop space!!! All my crafting and creating bits and bobs have now been shifted in there, giving fumbalinas its own space to blossom and bloom! (And i can now have a normal(ish) bedroom!)
Take a look -
